The Kamakura sharpening process produces a hook point that is just as good as a hand-sharpened hook, but without you having to put in all the time and effort required to do it yourself—you can be sure these hooks are perfect every time, straight out of the box.
The Kamakura Wide Gape X is a stepped-up version of this classic pattern, featuring a thicker wire, but with a much sharper, thinner point than the standard “X” hook – you’ll likely need to change your hook after every fish you catch, due to the delicate points.
It features a slightly inward-turned eye, with a short shank, a heavily forged bend, and a beaked point.
It can be used with a wide variety of different pop-up and bottom bait presentations, and once set it tends to stay set.
The tips are protected by a wax patch that must be carefully removed before use, and they come in a box that securely holds each hook in place—you get ten hooks in each box. Barbless and barbed versions are available in sizes 4, 6, or 8.
