Like rods, landing nets can be a very personal choice. Aesthetics, function, and price always influence the decision-making process of most anglers when purchasing a new piece of equipment.
We were inspired by a classic design from the past. Available in the early 1980s from a shop in North London, Dons of Edmonton. Their Springbow was a brown fibreglass net featuring a single, heavy stainless steel tube, but that said it was the net of its time and the only serious choice for the carp angler of the day!
The trend today seems to be for very thin handles similar to or matching the color of a fisherman's carp rods.
We completely bucked this trend. For performance, it was incredibly important that both the arms and the pole have intrinsic rigidity. Having a very small diameter pole increases weight because you have to increase the wall thickness; thin handles simply aren't as comfortable to hold. A larger diameter grip increases rigidity, is easier to use, and more comfortable to grip. We can use a thinner wall section without having to compromise strength or weight.
Our design features a 6' shaft that tapers from 23mm to 18mm. Crafted from ultra-lightweight, high-performance carbon fiber in a stunning satin black finish, it features a beautifully machined 316 stainless steel tip. This has created a net so lightweight that, once assembled and in use, it sits perfectly on the water's surface without the need for any type of floating net.
One of the key design points was to create a “declared” retractor block.
Something extremely light, very strong, and unique in appearance. From concept to production, we updated the design four times over a period of about two and a half years. The final version is stunning to look at. Designed by our friends at JAG, it's incredibly light, but most importantly, very easy to use and assemble the arms.
As you offer your arms to the block, you'll notice that it has a slight oval shape inside; we've worked the block so that it has what we call a "leading" edge.
This creates additional space for the arm as it's flexed and pushed into position. The arms emerge from the block at a perfect 91-degree angle. This, combined with the use of the stiffest arms we could make without compromising the assembly, gives each assembled net a truly lovely shape.
Each arm has a large, machined anodized aluminum rounded end, designed to prevent it from pushing through the net and damaging it. This part holds the thick green rope between the arms, with zero stretch and a perfect curve in the arms. This keeps everything as tight as possible and helps reduce drag as it pushes through the water.
The aluminum spreader block is machined on both the front and back faces (you can see the arms sitting inside). This feature further reduces weight and gives it a "frame-like" look. We added a small slot on the front face that fits a 15mm isotope (NOT included) and engraved the Spring Bow logo on the back. The finishing touch was to spray the block with a wear-resistant Gun Smoke ceramic finish.
We've created three versions, 42", 46", and 50", each featuring a medium-depth full Hexmesh mesh. The mesh section is deep enough for anglers to push the handle into the bottom with their arms high enough above the water to hold and stop any carp that jump free after catching them!
All nets are supplied in a durable Korda Dark Kamo carry case which has separate pockets for both the handle and arms.
