Gardner Covert Dark Wide Gape Talon

The Covert Dark Wide Gape Talon Tip is the latest incarnation in a long line of beak-tipped "Talon Tip" hooks; with the latest version receiving the Covert Dark's complete upgrade, starting with the most important point itself.
We've changed the shape and length of the Wide Gape Talon Tip; so it's now a nice, wide curve that's longer, thinner, and much sharper than before.

These new, longer points are a major improvement that ensures the hook strikes even faster and penetrates more easily.

This latest iteration of Covert Dark features the new, stripped-down Covert Dark plating.

This matte finish still provides excellent camouflage, but also ensures that attachment points remain absolutely pristine and razor sharp.

Covert Dark is a single, super-thin electroplated layer; and the reduced handling during the finishing process ensures the tips stay as sharp as the day they were made.

Gardner has also updated all models in the Covert Dark hook range by changing the standard shape to a micro barb format.

This modification offers two main advantages: First, many commercial fisheries require anglers to use small-barbed models since it is kinder to the fish's mouth, and second, micro-barbed hooks are stronger since less wire is cut to form the barb.

The combination of a 5° inward facing eye and the beaked point on the Wide Gape Talon tip definitely creates extremely positive hook holds as the angle is set at the optimum draw angle to ensure the hook enters and stays in.

The way the hook enters, as it is pulled in by the directional force created by the eye, is just perfect.

The main advantage of a beak stitch is how the stitch first catches.

As it begins to grip the angle of the point it naturally helps to keep the hook point in place, even if the fish is trying to free the rig (this is especially useful if you are fishing in a barbless location).

Another advantage is that the tip is less likely to be bent or damaged when fishing over gravel or other types of rough bottom, typically large stones.

Talon Covert Dark Wide Gape tips are made from the same super-strong, “bombproof” forged wire as the original Talon Tip models.
