The Kamakura sharpening process produces a hook point that is just as good as a hand-sharpened hook, but without you having to put in all the time and effort required to do it yourself.
The Kamakura Krank has a unique shape, characterized by a very wide opening, with a rather short, curved shank into a slightly inward-turned eye – the inward-turned effect is accentuated by the shape of the shank and the way it wraps around the eye.
The tip, which is slightly beaked, is offset and this shape helps it to “krank” its way through once it gets an initial grip.
These hooks are very strong and feature a micro barb that will not hinder penetration, but once inserted, will ensure that the hook stays in place.
A barbless version is also available. The Krank can be used with a wide variety of different rigs and is incredibly effective even with a simple knotless knot, or it can be used in more complicated setups, such as the spinner rig that Tom Dove favors.
The tips are protected by a drop of wax that must be carefully removed before use. They come in a box that holds each hook securely in place: each box contains ten hooks. Barbless and barbed versions are available in sizes 2, 4, 6, or 8.
